National Energy Council Prepares Grand National Energy Strategy

  • The National Energy Council (Dewan Energy Nasional – “DEN”) recently held a plenary session during which it discussed the forthcoming Grand National Energy Strategy (Grand Strategi Energi Nasional – “GSEN”), Energy Buffer Reserves (Cadangan Penyangga Energi/CPE) and strategic DEN plans for the 2021 - 2015 period. Indonesia’s Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Arifin Tasrif, has issued a statement revealing that the GSEN improves upon the General National Energy Plan (Rencana Umum Energi Nasional/RUEN) and has been based on input from ministries, agencies, state-owned enterprises, the private sector and other stakeholders.
  • Mr. Tasrif further added that Indonesia has now decided to actively encourage the use of new and renewable energy as an integral element of the national energy mix and as a part of efforts aimed at achieving the country’s emissions reduction targets and commitments under the Paris Agreement. It is hoped that the utilization of new and renewable energy can be ramped up to 24,000 megawatts by 2025 and to 38,000 megawatts by 2035.
  • During the plenary session, President Joko Widodo urged DEN to use the momentum of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic to move the country towards greener forms of energy. Mr. Widodo also stated that any strategy that is formulated must be forward-looking and must also be implemented consistently in order to reduce environmental damage.
  • The government is also planning to accelerate the downstream coal program and will soon complete work on various infrastructure projects relating to gas and electricity. Ultimately, the government is pushing to meet a target of 100% electrification, as well as to ensure that support is provided in relation to electrical infrastructure and that the one-price fuel-oil program is able to revive regional economies across the country. Mr. Tasrif also stated that the government is aiming to cease all imports of oil fuels and liquified petroleum gas by 2030. (SETKAB)
