House of Representatives Calls for Completion of Draft Bill on New and Renewable Energy Resources

  • In an attempt to increase Indonesia’s use of new and renewable energy resources to a level of 23% by 2025 from a comparatively low figure of 11% in 2020, as well as to increase environmental protections across the country, Eddy Soeparno, Vice-Chairman of Commission VII at the House of Representatives, is encouraging the house to complete deliberations of the Draft Bill on New and Renewable Energy Resources (“Draft Bill”).
  • According to Mr. Soeparno, the ongoing use of fossil-fuel-based energy is proving increasingly untenable due to its harmful effects upon the environment and its increasingly finite nature.
  • The move to complete deliberations of the Draft Bill is also being supported by the Rector of Bogor’s IPB University, who considers the Draft Bill to be of utmost importance to Indonesia in terms of strengthening the country’s energy sovereignty which, he believes, should increasingly involve turning to local resources as part of efforts to achieve energy independence.
