- The government is currently deliberating a Draft Regulation of the Government (Rancangan Peraturan Pemerintah – “RPP”) for Law No. 11 of 2020 on Job Creation regarding Halal Product Guarantees (“Draft RPP”).
- The Secretary of the Halal Product Guarantee Agency (Balai Jaminan Produk Halal – “BJHP”), Muhammad Lutfi, has stated that halal guarantees are essential in order to ensure the safety of traded halal products. Once this new Draft RPP comes into force, the halal certification process should be shortened significantly while ensuring that all issued halal certificates are authentic and legitimate.
- Mr. Lutfi has also stressed that the Draft RPP will address the following pivotal areas: 1) Cooperation between the BJHP and the Indonesian Ulema Council (Majelis Ulama Indonesia/MUI); 2) The implementation of halal product guarantees, as issued by the BJHP, should provide greater legal certainty, accuracy and accountability for businesses; 3) Halal certification will include self-declarations; 4) Participation from the general public, including socialization undertaken via mass organizations and popular publications; 5) The halal certificate issuance process should be completed within 21 business days and may be extended if any doubts emerge regarding the material content of any goods which are the subject of halal certification, and so forth.
