- Acting Officials of the Secretary-General (“Officials”) at the Ministry of Communications and Informatics (“Ministry”) have revealed that a massive transformation is taking place within Indonesia in terms of technology and digitalization, including access to the digital economy. Proof of this transformation breaks down into the following data: 1) Data from the Indonesian Internet Service Providers Association (Asosiasi Penyelenggara Jasa Internet Indonesia/APJII) on internet use statistics for 2020 reveals an annual increase of 8.9%; 2) Data from the Indonesian Telecommunications Society (Masyarakat Telekomunikasi Indonesia/Mastel) reveals an increase in the utilization of fixed internet broadband services of 28% this year; and 3) Data from the Financial Services Authority (Otoritas Jasa Keuangan/OJK) on financial technology lending transaction values currently show that said values have reached a national total of IDR 128.7 trillion.
- Through an appraisal of the above data, the World Bank has predicted that year-on-year development within Indonesia in September 2020 reached 113%. This achievement has led the Indonesian President, Joko Widodo, to demand that the Ministry work towards an accelerated digital transformation of the national economy.
- In order to achieve such an acceleration in accordance with this presidential instruction, Officials have formulated a strategy for the Ministry which will encompass the following measures: 1) Completion of high-quality, wide-distribution telecommunications infrastructure; 2) Development of technologies in order to support digital transformation (including the development and adoption of 5G technology); 3) Development of sufficient amounts of high-quality human resources and digital talent; and 4) Fulfillment of primary legalization and strengthening of international cooperation.
