Government to Accelerate EBT Implementation to Secure Supplies of Energy

  • In an attempt to maintain both the quantity and quality of Indonesia’s energy supply, as well as affordable prices and environmentally friendly energy infrastructure for the 2020 - 2040 period, the Indonesian Government has now committed to establishing the so-called National Energy Grand Strategy.
  • Developed energy strategies under this framework encompass the following: 1) Improvement of oil lifting; 2) Encouraging the development of electric vehicles; 3) Establishment and development of refineries; 4) Development of new renewable energy (energi baru terbarukan – “EBT”) in an effort to reduce reliance on oil imports; and 5) Reduction in the importation of liquid petroleum gas through the utilization of electric stoves, construction of urban gas-pipeline networks and the utilization of dimethyl ether.
  • In relation to the above, the Indonesian Government has in recent years issued various regulations that address the energy sector and that are helping to support secure supplies of energy, particularly low-emissions forms of energy. These regulatory frameworks include, among others, Regulation of the Government No. 79 of 2014 on the National Policy for Energy and Regulation of President No. 22 of 2017 on the General Plan for National Energy. Moreover, the government also ratified the Paris Agreement through the issuance of Law No. 16 of 2016, which is targeting an overall reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
  • As a progressive contribution to the development of solar power plants, the National Movement for One Million Solar Roofs (Gerakan Nasional Sejuta Surya Atas/GNSSA) recently conferred Solar PV Rooftop Champion Awards for 2020 upon the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources for the 2016 - 2019 period; as well as Iganituis Johan, Director of EBT at the Directorate-General of EBT and Energy Conversion; PT Sumarecon Agung Tbk; PT Tirta Investama; Coca Cola Amatil Indonesia and PT Asta Honda Motor.
