- Indonesia’s Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Arifin Tasrif, has revealed that in an attempt to actualize the 1997 Kyoto Protocol which addressed efforts to reduce the impacts of climate change, the Indonesian Government has decided to broaden its market for new and renewable energy (energi baru terbarukan – “EBT”) through the following initiatives: 1) The renewable-energy base industrial-development program and 2) The renewable-energy base economic-development program.
- Mr. Tasrif has also stated that the above-listed programs are intended to accelerate the utilization of EBT within the country’s industrial areas and special economic zones, as well as to support local economic zones located on remote islands. These measures represent a follow up to the preparation of the Draft Regulation of the President concerning the purchase of EBT electricity by PT PLN (Persero).
- In addition, the government is also hoping to optimize the implementation of bio-energy (which encompasses accelerating the establishment of waste-based power plants, as well as the utilization of biomass and waste materials by electric steam power plants, and so forth).
- Offering support for the EBT program, the Director of Various New and Renewable Energy at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Harris Yahya, has asserted that the enhancement of the country’s EBT capabilities is vital for environmental reasons, as well as to optimize price competitiveness.
