Government Initiates Feasibility Studies for Utilization of CPO by Diesel Power Plants

  • The Research and Development Center for Electricity, Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation Technology at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (“P3TKEBTKE”) has initiated several feasibility studies which will address the utilization of crude palm oil during the operation of the country’s diesel-fuelled power plants (pembangkit listrik tenaga diesel – “PLTD”). This new feasibility research was officially inaugurated at a meeting that was held in Bogor earlier this August in order to establish a CPO quality standard that complies with SNI 01-2901-2006 and SNI 8483:2018.
  • P3TKEBTKE Head, Mr. Chrisnawan, has stated that the research is being initiated due to the high quantities of fuel required to operate the countries PLTD, which is in turn leading to inefficiencies and high costs being incurred by Indonesia’s state electricity company, PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (“PLN”). Indeed, in 2018, the cost of the fuel required by the country’s PLTD amounted to 16% of PLN’s total operating costs whereas electricity generation itself only amounted to 6%.
  • The research will begin with the establishment of an official PLTD database which will gather data relating to the characteristics of PLTD (i.e. general operations, efficiency, etc.). The subsequent research itself will comprise operational examinations and analyses of five different types of fuel (i.e. B30, pure CPO, demineralized CPO, industrial vegetable oil and degummed CPO). The research program will conclude with the drawing up of distribution mapping for CPO industries that will comprise production capacities, freight forwarding mapping, currently existing supplies, etc. (ESDM)
