- The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (“Ministry”) is currently developing a number of alternative energy sources, which include Dimethyl Ether (“DME”). These new sources of energy will ultimately replace Liquefied Petroleum Gas (“LPG”) as the primary energy source used by Indonesian households. One of the main reasons behind the move away from LPG is that supplies of this fuel primarily come from imports (75% of total usage), a fact which is considered less than ideal in terms of overall national energy security.
- DME has several advantages, including: 1) DME possesses similar characteristics to LPG, meaning that it can be produced through the use of already existing LPG infrastructure; 2) DME can be produced from various energy sources, including renewable sources; 3) DME has a higher energy density than LPG; 4) DME easily decomposes in air, does not damage ozone and can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 20%; 5) DME produces a more stable flame quality and does not produce any particulate matter (pm), NOx or sulfur; and 6) DME can potentially be sourced from a greater variety of raw materials.
- The current state of play is that the Ministry completed a DME application test up to a level of 100% use within areas of Palembang and Muara Enim between December 2019 and January 2020. This pilot project involved 155 households and the results were deemed to be generally acceptable. (KEMENTERIAN ENERGI DAN SUMBER DAYA MINERAL)
