Minister of Industry Seeks to Increase Investments in Industrial Sector in 2020

  • The Minister of Industry (“Minister”), Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita has projected that in 2020, growth in Indonesia’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) deriving from non-oil and gas processing industries could reach 4.80% - 5.30%. Growth in productivity across a number of sectors is set to rise through an increase in investment and, overall, the Minister is optimistic as regards the performance of manufacturing industries during 2020.
  • In order to achieve the abovementioned target, the Minister is prioritizing the attracting of investment, specifically within the following sectors: 1) Export-oriented sectors; 2) Generation of import substitution products; 3) High-technology-based sectors; and 4) The crowdsourcing (padat karya) sector.
  • In terms of foreign investment facilitates, the government will continue to prioritize industrial distribution outside of Java, including through the development of priority industrial zones. During the 2020 - 2024 period, a total of 27 priority industrial zones will be specifically addressed across Sumatra, Kalimantan, Madura, Java, Sulawesi, Maluku, Papua and West Nusa Tenggara.
  • A total of seven challenges have been identified as regards the development of Indonesian industry, specifically: 1) Lack of raw materials; 2) Lack of infrastructure; 3) Lack of facilities; 4) Insufficient human resources; 5) Ongoing dependence on imported products; 6) Rigid specifications which have to be complied with in terms of toxic and hazardous waste (known locally as B3 waste); and 7) Limited access to both financing and supplies of raw and auxiliary materials for small- and medium-scale enterprises (UKM).
