YLKI Calls for Caution during National Online Shopping Day

  • While welcoming national online shopping day on 11 November 2019, the Chairperson of the Daily Board of the Indonesian Consumers Foundation (Yayasan Lembaga Konsumen Indonesia/YLKI), Tulus Abadi, advised the public to remain both rational and critical when shopping online. Mr. Abadi went on to set out several of the key behaviors exhibited by successful online consumers, specifically: 1) Checking and studying the types of discount offered through the marketplace, including types of discounted goods; 2) Inspecting the profiles of stores operating within the online marketplace; and 3) Not being tempted to purchase more than they can afford through the use of pay-later facilities.
  • Mr. Abadi also urged online marketplaces to implement responsible promotional and marketing strategies, to uphold notions of fair business ethics and to comply with the relevant regulations. Moreover, Mr. Abadi stressed the importance of the implementation of a proper regulatory framework within the online shopping sector and is therefore urging the government to finally pass both the Draft Bill on Personal Data Protection and the Draft Bill on Online Shopping, which are expected to introduce improved protections for consumers during online shopping transactions.
