- Indonesia’s newly-appointed Minister of Communications and Information, Johnny G. Plate (“Minister”), is already making plans for the switch-off of analog television and its replacement with new digital television services by 2024. The Minister recently expressed his optimism that the relevant infrastructure and resources would be ready in time for Indonesia’s existing television stations to be able to complete the digital broadcasting migration process by the abovementioned date.
- In order to meet this deadline, the Minister is urging the House of Representatives to complete its ongoing revision of Law No. 32 of 2002 on Broadcasting so as to expedite preparations for the switchover to digital broadcasting.
- While the revision process is ongoing, the Minister has also stated that his ministry is currently targeting completion of the establishment of 5,000 Base Transceiver Stations (BTS) which will be located throughout Indonesia. Meanwhile, work on the country’s fiberoptic cable network continues and preparations are also being made for the launch of a multifunctional satellite which will be able to offer coverage across current blind-spot areas.
