Use of Artificial Intelligence Slated to Improve Efficiency of Lawyers

  • As we move ever deeper into the digital era, legal technology is now being developed by many businesses with the aim of assisting lawyers, maximizing their efficient use of time and minimizing administrative work, particularly in relation to cross-border transactions. Tech Law Fest 2019 was recently held at the Singapore Academy of Law (“SAL”) and featured various startups which were there to promote their legal-technology products, which encompassed online contract negotiation, contract compliance management, due diligence accuracy examinations and many more useful functions.
  • The Singapore Government has demonstrated significant support for the island state’s younger citizens as they work to develop various technologies, particularly technologies which are able to assist the legal services industry. According to Singapore’s Minister of Law and Home Affairs, Shanmugam, artificial intelligence (“AI”) may help lawyers to make decisions and engage in analysis. However, Shanmugam also explained that any liabilities in cases of errors which are made by AI should be attributed to the AI’s creator (product liability), as well as to the lawyer who is utilizing the AI (vicarious liability).
