Govt. Further Pushes for the Introduction of Electric Vehicles

  • Djoko Sasono, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Transportation (“Ministry”), recently informed the public that electric vehicles would be introduced in 2020 as a part of popular urban mass transportation systems such as the TransJakarta busway system and Damri buses through the “buy the service” scheme. This policy represents a follow-up measure to the recent issuance of Regulation of the President No. 55 of 2019 on the Acceleration of the Introduction of Battery-Powered Electric Motor Vehicles (“Regulation 55/2019”).
  • In addition to the measure outlined above, Mr. Sasono added that the Ministry would also implement the following measures in a bid to accelerate the introduction of electric vehicles: 1) Procurement of electric vehicles; 2) Development of electric-vehicle infrastructure through public-private-partnership schemes, including the establishment of official testing centers (balai pengujian) for electric vehicles; and 3) Provision of incentives and the formulation of regulations which are electric-vehicle friendly.
  • The Ministry is currently formulating two implementing frameworks for electric vehicles, specifically legal frameworks on test types and periodic testing. (dephub.go.id)
  • For more on Regulation 55/2019, see ILB No. 3672.
