- The Indonesian Government recently issued Regulation of the President No. 55 of 2019 on the Acceleration of the Battery-Powered Electric Motor Vehicles for Road Transportation Program (“Regulation 55/2019”).
- Commenting on the issuance of Regulation 55/2019, the Minister of Transportation, Budi Karya Sumadi, recently stated that the introduction of battery-powered electric motor vehicles (“Electric Vehicles”) would not only support the government’s environmental sustainability program but would also contribute to the national energy resilience and diversification program, with the eventual goal of reducing the current gas-fuel subsidy.
- Mr. Sumadi added that various incentives and facilities, both fiscal and non-fiscal, would be granted to any parties who supported the Electric Vehicles acceleration program. Moreover, both the Ministry of Finance and the country’s governors have been urged to accommodate these incentives, which encompass a framework on parking tariffs.
- However, Mr. Sumadi also raised the issue of noise in relation to Electric Vehicles, which are almost totally silent. Mr. Sumadi stated his expectation that Electric Vehicles would ultimately be required to produce a certain level of sound in the interest of safety. (dephub.go.id)
