- In the hope that Indonesia will ultimately develop the electric automotive industry, the President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, has finally signed Regulation of the President on Electric Vehicles.
- Through the development of the electric automotive industry within Indonesia, President Joko Widodo is optimistic that Indonesia may become a leading player in the manufacture of batteries for said electric vehicles due to the fact that the country is gifted with an abundance of the natural resources required for the manufacture of such batteries.
- Many of the materials which are used in batteries for electric vehicles are expensive and thus have a significant impact on vehicle prices. Indeed, electric vehicles can be up to 40% more expensive than non-electric vehicles. As a result of this price discrepancy, President Widodo is encouraging the Governor of DKI Jakarta, as well as the heads of other regions capable of drawing on sizeable regional budgets, to grant incentives to owners of electric vehicles, including free parking, free ownership transfers (balik nama) and other types of incentives.
