- The Ministry of Industry, in conjunction with both the Ministry of Communication and Informatics and the Ministry of Trade, is are currently finalizing the legal framework which will govern the National Identification Registration Information System (Sistem Informasi Registrasi Identifikasi Nasional – “SIRNA”). SIRNA is being introduced in order to support the International Mobile Equipment Identity (“IMEI”) program within Indonesia and the new legal framework is expected to come into force on 17 August 2019.
- The new SIRNA regulatory framework will introduce mandatory IMEI registrations, which should in turn allow the Indonesian Government to be able to identify, register and block any cellular telecommunications devices which fail to comply with the prevailing standards. Moreover, it is hoped that IMEI controls will also lead to improvements in the quality of cellular telecommunications services and ultimately reduce the circulation of black-market cellphones.
- In addition, SIRNA is expected to be able to process the IMEI database, as collected from various stakeholders, as well as to produce a valid IMEI list. SIRNA has already been installed at the Ministry of Industry’s Data and Information Center in order to conduct a trial of the new system.
- It is hoped that both SIRNA and IMEI registrations will ultimately lead to an improved business climate within the cellphone sector. (KEMENPERIN)
