- The Ministry of Communication and Informatics (“MOCI”) has finally decided to block all advertising and content relating to cigarettes and smoking across several social media platforms. This action is being introduced as a follow-up to official Letter of the Ministry of Health to the MOCI No. TM.04.01/Menkes/314/2019 on the Blocking of Cigarette Advertising on the Internet.
- As a result of research undertaken by the Directorate-General of Informational Applications, MOCI discovered some 114 channels and pages on Facebook, Instagram and YouTube which contained cigarette-related content and a process of blocking said content is currently underway.
- Tubagus Haryo Karbyanto, Coordinator for Public Advocate Solidarity for the Control of Indonesian Tobacco (“SAPTA”), voiced a positive response to the ongoing blocking of cigarette advertisements by MOCI. However, Karbyanto has suggested that in this context, MOCI should have invoked Article 30 of Regulation of the Government No. 109 of 2012 on the Safeguarding of Materials Containing Additive Substances in the Form of Tobacco Products for Health Purposes, instead referring to the Law on Broadcasting.
- Meanwhile, Lisda Sundari, who heads the Children’s Lantern Foundation recently commented that cigarette advertising across all forms of media, including both broadcast media and non-digital media, should also be blocked.
