- The government is being encouraged to seek mediation with the US in light of the recent World Trade Organization (“WTO”) decision on non-tariff restrictions on imports of products from the United States of America (US) into Indonesia, which authorizes the US to receive compensation amounting to IDR 5 trillion. Mediation is seen as necessary in order to officially inform the US that the Indonesian Government has already made regulation changes to its international trade tariffs so that they fall into line with the WTO resolution.
- The current disagreement dates back to the WTO resolution of November 2017 which saw the US and New Zealand emerging victorious against Indonesia after it had imposed import measures on horticultural products.
- Based on the report issued by the WTO dispute-settlement gateway, 10 Indonesian regulations were deemed not to be in line with WTO regulations and led to US retaliation, specifically the imposition of tariffs on Indonesian products. This retaliation effectively put an end to Indonesia’s ability to negotiate various trade deals with the US.
