OVERVIEW
According to a report by WALHI, Indonesia’s preeminent environmental protection organization, the destruction of forests in Indonesia reached 4 million hectare in 2012.[1] This situation has been aggravated by the ineffective performance of law enforcers in investigating crimes related to forest destruction.
The slow progress of investigation processes has contributed to numerous cases never reaching trial.[2] Many commentators also believe that the criminal charges imposed in such matters are not sufficient to serve as adequate punishment and deterrent for perpetrators, especially when a corporation is involved.[3]
