Excise and Duties - Not as much from Tobacco

The House of Representatives (Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat / DPR) has passed an Amendment Bill to Law No. 11 of 1995 on Excise. The overriding feature of this Bill is to maximize excise receipts to realize the prosperity of the nation. A grand vision but the passed Bill sets much lower limits for these receipts than earlier versions of the Bill that endured the debate and discussion process.

Article 2(1) has been amended to stipulate certain characteristics or properties of goods that are subject to the provisions of the Excise Law, namely: to control consumption of certain goods, supervision of distribution, and the use of goods that have a negative impact on the community or the environment, among others.
