Law on New Special Regional Province of Jakarta Finally Issued

After a lengthy period of deliberation, the government has finally issued Law No. 2 of 2024 on the Special Regional Province of Jakarta (Daerah Khusus Jakarta – "DKJ"), which will come into force when Decree of the President on the Transfer of State Capital to the Capital City of Nusantara has been stipulated. The new Law encompasses 73 articles spanning 12 chapters that address the following arrangements, among others: 1) Position and function; 2) Limitations and division of areas; 3) Principles and government structures; 4) City/regency councils and deliberative institutions in urban districts (kelurahan); 5) Government affairs and special authorities; 6) Foreign cooperation; 7) Funding; and 8) Agglomeration areas.
At its core, the new Law features the same number of articles and chapters as the most recent Draft Bill on DKJ, which was published on 18 March 2024 and which was analyzed and summarized in the following edition of Indonesian Legal Brief: “2024 Draft Bill on the Special Region of Jakarta: Important Updates.”
